How VoterLens works

This page explains where our information comes from and how we present it.

Which races we cover

Federal races (President, U.S. Senate and U.S. House), statewide offices such as Governor and Attorney General, and the State Senate and State Assembly. We don't currently cover local races, judicial races or ballot measures. Coverage is New York only for 2026.

Finding your ballot

When you enter a ZIP code, we look up the ballot for the center of that ZIP code with Ballotpedia. Your congressional district comes from a ZIP-code-to-district dataset, and your State Senate and State Assembly districts come from the U.S. Census Bureau geocoder.

Some ZIP codes cross district lines, so your actual ballot can differ slightly. If in doubt, check with your county board of elections.

Candidates and party lines

The list of candidates and their party lines comes from Ballotpedia, and we show it exactly as Ballotpedia provides it. In New York, a candidate can appear on more than one party line (for example, Democratic and Working Families). Every line Ballotpedia lists is shown. Candidate lists are refreshed every few hours.

How candidates are ordered

If the current officeholder is running, they are listed first, followed by the other candidates in alphabetical order. We don't rank candidates or filter them by party.

Campaign finance

Fundraising figures for federal candidates come from the Federal Election Commission (FEC). For state candidates, we use AI-assisted research of public campaign-finance records such as FollowTheMoney. When we can't confirm a figure, we show it as not available rather than guessing.

Voting records

Voting records and sponsored legislation for members of Congress come from Congress.gov, GovTrack and OpenWatchdog.

Background, issue positions and endorsements

These sections are researched with an AI model (OpenAI) that searches the web and summarizes public sources. Each profile lists the sources used, and profiles are refreshed regularly.

AI summaries can contain mistakes. For anything important, please check the linked sources.

Our rules

We don't endorse, rank or rate candidates. We carry no ads and accept no political funding. Every candidate gets the same profile sections, from the same sources, presented the same way.
