Prior to public service, he was a small business owner for more than 30 years in the construction trades industry.
Committee Assignments: Committee on Environmental Conservation · Committee on Local Governments · Committee on Social Services · Committee on Tourism, Parks, Arts and Sports Development · Committee on Governmental Operations · Commission on Solid Waste Management
Matthew Simpson, a Republican Assemblymember for New York State Assembly District 114, has focused healthcare-related work on rural and regional access: easing licensure for out-of-state health professionals, modifying nursing-home staffing rules to account for workforce shortages, and enabling ambulance-service districts in Adirondack Park communities.
Matthew Simpson emphasizes affordability, fiscal discipline, tax relief, lower energy costs, infrastructure investment, and a more business-friendly climate as central to improving New York’s economy and job growth. He links North Country economic development to small-business relief, reliable and affordable energy, broadband/infrastructure, and resisting mandates he says raise costs for employers and families.
Specific Actions & Proposals
Simpson joined a bipartisan push for more CHIPS infrastructure funding, saying local roads support economic growth and that inflation and mandates are straining municipal budgets.
SourceSimpson joined Assembly Minority colleagues in urging the governor to declare an energy emergency, citing volatile electricity prices and small businesses being priced out of operating in New York.
SourceSimpson criticized the Assembly one-house budget as excessive but supported provisions he said would aid North Country residents and small businesses, including unemployment-insurance debt relief and investments in job creation.
SourceMatthew Simpson's legislative record on immigration emphasizes stricter state and local controls: he co-sponsored bills requiring ICE notification for certain noncitizen defendants, refugee registration and monitoring, and local approval or opt-in before asylum-seeker or migrant housing is established. He has also co-sponsored legislation related to limiting non-commercial driver's license rules in boundary-land counties.
Matthew Simpson supports an "all-of-the-above" energy approach that includes renewables alongside natural gas and nuclear power, while criticizing New York's CLCPA mandates as too costly, unreliable, and harmful to rural communities. He has opposed restrictions on natural gas access and urged reforms to renewable-energy siting so local control, farmland, wildlife habitat, affordability, and grid reliability receive greater weight.
Specific Actions & Proposals
Simpson stated support for reforming the Office of Renewable Energy Siting by requiring stricter adherence to DEC guidance, more public participation, and fuller review of ecological and economic impacts.
SourceSimpson joined Assembly Minority colleagues in urging Gov. Kathy Hochul to veto the NY HEAT Act, opposing repeal of the 100-foot gas service rule because he said it would raise housing and utility costs and strain the grid.
SourceSimpson joined Minority Assembly members in signing a letter asking the governor to declare an energy state of emergency amid wholesale electricity price volatility and supply concerns.
SourceMatthew Simpson’s education positions emphasize flexibility and resources for rural North Country schools, including opposition to unfunded mandates that he says divert resources from students. He has supported school meal funding, music education access, in-person learning, and allowing schools to offer whole or reduced-fat New York milk.
Specific Actions & Proposals
Simpson said he supports continuing music programs and praised efforts to ensure students have access to instruments and music-education opportunities.
SourceSimpson stated that he agreed with keeping children in school for in-person learning, saying students could not afford to lose more ground because of pandemic restrictions.
SourceMatthew Simpson emphasizes public safety through support for law enforcement resources, tougher criminal-justice measures, restoring judicial discretion in bail decisions, school-safety transparency, correction-officer safety, and targeted regulations to prevent safety risks from drugs, firearms rules, and energy-storage siting.
Specific Actions & Proposals
Simpson supported the Assembly Minority's Restore Order plan, including restoring judicial discretion in bail, expanding bail eligibility for gun and hate crimes, parole reform, and tougher penalties for violent offenders.
SourceSimpson advocated for the Restore Order package, revisiting bail reform, enforcing the rule of law, and giving courts more discretion to keep dangerous offenders off the street.
SourceSimpson joined a press conference calling to repeal New York's bail reform laws and specifically restore judicial discretion for judges in public-safety decisions.
SourceAfter touring Rikers Island, Simpson called for repeal of the HALT Act and said correction officers need authority restored to improve their safety amid assaults and staffing concerns.
