Dan Stec is a North Country native, Navy veteran and Adirondack 46er who served eight years in the U.S. Navy nuclear power program, including as a nuclear engineer aboard the USS Truxtun. After returning home to Queensbury, he served as town councilman, town supervisor for five terms, and chairman of the Warren County Board of Supervisors for two terms. He was elected to the New York State Assembly in 2012, served four terms, and was elected to the New York State Senate for the 45th District in 2020.
Committee Assignments: Environmental Conservation · Internet and Technology · Education · Health · Rules · State-Native American Relations · Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs
Dan Stec’s healthcare record emphasizes rural access, EMS reimbursement, Medicaid program oversight, and easing licensing barriers for providers serving medically vulnerable children. He serves on the New York Senate Health Committee and has sponsored or supported measures tied to Medicaid accountability, telehealth access, ambulance reimbursement, and rural healthcare capacity.
Dan Stec emphasizes reducing costs and mandates on businesses, supporting regional infrastructure and redevelopment funding, and using targeted programs to spur job creation in New York's 45th Senate District. He has backed state economic-development awards, airport revitalization funding, agricultural workforce measures, broadband access, and reuse of closed state facilities as economic opportunities for the North Country.
Specific Actions & Proposals
Stec supported an $8.5 million Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization award for Adirondack Regional Airport, saying it would create 90 short-term jobs and expand economic opportunity in the North Country.
SourceStec opposed the packaging reduction bill, arguing that its mandates would raise business costs, hurt employers, and cause job losses or business departures from New York.
SourceStec supported more than $15 million in state economic-development funding for projects in the 45th Senate District, saying the awards would promote local economic development and job growth.
SourceDan Stec, the Republican state senator for New York Senate District 45, generally frames immigration as a public-safety and border-security issue. He supports allowing state and local law enforcement to cooperate with federal immigration authorities and opposes state benefits or policies he says protect or subsidize people in the country illegally.
Specific Actions & Proposals
Stec urged Governor Hochul to use executive authority to lift Green Light Law restrictions that bar local law enforcement coordination with federal immigration authorities in northern border counties.
SourceStec opposed U.S. Customs and Border Protection reducing hours at four northern New York border crossings, arguing the decision would worsen safety and emergency-response problems amid what he called an illegal immigration crisis.
SourceStec criticized Senate bill S2237 as providing taxpayer-funded health care coverage to illegal immigrants and said lawful taxpayers should not subsidize such coverage.
SourceDuring a 2026 District 45 debate, Stec criticized the Local Cops, Local Crimes Act's limits on local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration officials, saying preventing information-sharing among law enforcement is unsafe.
SourceDan Stec’s Climate & Energy position emphasizes affordability, grid reliability, and skepticism toward New York’s CLCPA clean-energy mandates. He has proposed cost-benefit studies and delays or suspensions of emissions requirements, while supporting an “all-of-the-above” energy strategy that keeps nuclear and natural gas in the mix.
Specific Actions & Proposals
Stec signed a Senate Republican letter urging Governor Hochul to declare an energy emergency, suspend CLCPA-related laws, pursue an all-of-the-above energy policy, advance nuclear development, and keep natural gas in New York’s energy mix.
SourceDan Stec's education record emphasizes rural school flexibility, career and agricultural pathways, and support for arts/music education, while opposing unfunded or costly statewide mandates such as New York's electric school bus requirement. As a sitting senator for New York Senate District 45, he has co-sponsored education-related bills and voted yes in Education Committee or floor votes on measures affecting curriculum, school access, and workforce exposure.
Specific Actions & Proposals
Stec called for rescinding the statewide electric school bus mandate and replacing it with a pilot program to evaluate electric buses across urban, rural, and suburban districts, citing costs and North Country conditions.
SourceDan Stec, Republican New York State Senator for District 45, emphasizes a law-and-order public safety agenda focused on repealing or changing bail reform, increasing judicial discretion, supporting law enforcement and corrections officers, and opposing criminal-record sealing policies he says reduce safety. He has also backed legislation requiring law enforcement notification to ICE after arrests or convictions of non-citizens and has supported repealing the HALT Act in prisons.
Specific Actions & Proposals
Stec opposed New York's Clean Slate law, saying sealing records for serious convictions would deprive landlords, employers, schools, and communities of information needed to assess public safety risks.
SourceStec joined Senate Republican colleagues in calling on Governor Hochul to remove Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, arguing Bragg's policies failed to protect citizens and law enforcement.
