Brad Lander served as New York City Comptroller from 2022 to 2025 and as a New York City Council member representing District 39 from 2010 to 2021. Before elected office, he directed the Pratt Center for Community Development and the Fifth Avenue Committee, working on affordable housing, community planning, and economic development.
Committee Assignments: Civil Rights · Consumer Affairs · Economic Development · Education · General Welfare · Women’s Issues
Brad Lander frames healthcare as a human right and supports universal, publicly guaranteed coverage, including Medicare for All and single-payer-style reforms. He also backs protecting retiree health coverage, reducing medical debt, expanding coverage for vulnerable and immigrant New Yorkers, and maintaining access to reproductive health care.
Specific Actions & Proposals
Lander says he will champion Medicare for All in Congress to make universal healthcare a reality and treat healthcare as a human right.
SourceLander opposed Mayor Eric Adams' effort to move retired municipal workers into Medicare Advantage, arguing that the city should not pull promised healthcare away from retirees.
SourceLander states that he will push back against hospital closures, improve coverage for vulnerable residents, and expand New York City's efforts to eliminate crushing medical debt.
SourceAs Comptroller, Lander's office argued that a Medicare for All-type program or the New York Health Act would provide universal, portable coverage and recommended bolstering NYC Care and NYC Health + Hospitals so every New Yorker can access care regardless of ability to pay.
SourceMoveOn's candidate profile says Lander supports expanded healthcare coverage for undocumented neighbors as part of his immigration and healthcare agenda.
SourceBrad Lander presents a progressive economic platform focused on working-family affordability, stronger labor protections, higher wages, taxing the wealthy, and public investment that creates good jobs. He argues the economy is rigged against working people and supports federal action on infrastructure, transit, clean energy, and child care funded in part by higher taxes on the rich.
Specific Actions & Proposals
Lander says he will fight for an economy that is not stacked against working people and against billionaire, corporate, Wall Street, crypto, and AIPAC influence in politics.
SourceLander highlights his record creating job-training programs for more than 10,000 New Yorkers and passing protections for app-based drivers, fast-food and retail workers, and freelancers against wage theft and abusive scheduling.
SourceLander supports raising the minimum wage, expanding just-cause job protections beyond fast-food workers, requiring severance pay in layoffs, banning noncompete clauses, expanding paid leave, and creating sectoral standards boards.
SourceLander says it would be better to raise income and business taxes at the federal level and that he would support taxing the rich in Congress to help fund programs such as universal child care.
SourceLander supports renewed transportation and infrastructure spending focused on sustainability, transit operations, fair wages, worker protections, and durable public goods.
SourceBrad Lander presents a strongly pro-immigrant platform: he supports abolishing ICE, protecting immigrant New Yorkers from courthouse arrests and detention, expanding legal immigration pathways, and creating a faster asylum system that still offers refuge to people with credible fear of persecution. He also supports a broader comprehensive immigration-reform framework that includes a path to citizenship for undocumented people already in the United States.
Specific Actions & Proposals
Lander says it is time to abolish ICE, argues Congress should not provide the agency more funding, and says the U.S. should still maintain secure borders and immigration courts.
SourceLander says he has accompanied immigrants to court dates and will fight ICE arrests at immigration court, describing protection of immigrant neighbors as an area where he will not compromise.
SourceLander supports increasing legal help for immigrants facing detention and deportation and says volunteers should document abuses, advise immigrants of their rights, and escort people to safety at 26 Federal Plaza.
SourceLander says the immigration system should evaluate credible-fear claims more quickly, offer refuge to people with credible fear of persecution, and return others to pursue different legal pathways.
SourceLander says he would support a comprehensive immigration-reform deal that includes a path to citizenship for undocumented people already in the United States along with a stronger and more functional immigration system.
SourceBrad Lander supports aggressive climate action centered on a Green New Deal, rapid renewable-energy deployment, fossil-fuel divestment, climate resilience, and making major polluters pay for climate damages. He also supports safe nuclear power as an alternative to fossil fuels and backs permitting reforms for housing, transit, renewable energy, and resilience projects.
Specific Actions & Proposals
Lander says he proudly supports the Green New Deal because it pairs aggressive emissions reductions with job creation and economic justice.
SourceLander has said safe nuclear energy has a role to play in transitioning away from fossil fuels fast enough to prevent catastrophic climate damage.
SourceLander's campaign says he led responsible investing by divesting $4 billion from fossil fuels as NYC Comptroller.
SourceFood & Water Action says Lander championed efforts to make polluters pay for climate damages and fund climate resiliency programs.
SourceLander urged New York leaders to make major fossil-fuel polluters pay into a fund for resilience, infrastructure, grid, heat, and public-health investments tied to climate damage.
SourceBrad Lander supports expanding public education and early childhood programs, including universal child care, universal Pre-K/3K, a proposed 2-K program, free afterschool, and expanded CUNY scholarships. He also emphasizes improving K-12 conditions through smaller classes, literacy support, teacher support, student mental-health services, reduced cell-phone use, and safer, better-equipped public school buildings.
Specific Actions & Proposals
Lander supports universal child care, universal Pre-K and 3K, creating a "2-K for All" program, and expanding afterschool and summer programming.
SourceLander says he would provide free, high-quality afterschool programming in every school while reducing class size, improving reading instruction, supporting teachers, addressing student mental health, and banning cell phones in schools.
SourceLander highlights that he led a campaign to secure air-conditioning in every NYC public school classroom after documenting overheated classrooms through the #TooHotToLearn effort.
SourceLander proposed extending New York City's universal preschool system to 2-year-olds as a step toward universal child care.
SourceLander said he supports removing police officers from schools and investing in counselors, nurses, and restorative justice programs to help end the school-to-prison pipeline.
SourceBrad Lander’s public safety platform emphasizes reducing crime while pairing NYPD staffing and accountability reforms with non-police, public-health responses to homelessness, mental health crises, gun violence, retail theft, hate crimes, and traffic violence. He supports filling budgeted NYPD positions and keeping police focused on core duties, while expanding community violence intervention, mental-health crisis response, and safer-streets infrastructure.
Specific Actions & Proposals
Lander supports a public safety plan aimed at mental health crises, homelessness, gun violence, drug overdoses, retail theft, and hate crimes through coordinated city agencies, community groups, and public health services.
SourceLander supports recruiting and retaining personnel to fill all 35,051 budgeted NYPD positions, improving training, and shifting non-police work to better-suited social workers or traffic agents.
SourceLander supports community-led Crisis Management System and Community Violence Intervention programs, calling them critical to reducing shootings and recommending stronger oversight, dashboards, coordination, and faster provider payments.
SourceLander supports deploying mental health professionals and peer responders to all 911 mental health crisis calls, with police alongside only when operators believe there is a risk of violence, as part of a plan to end street homelessness for people with serious mental illness.
SourceLander supports reshaping federal transportation funding to prioritize repairs, safety impacts, reduced traffic fatalities, walkability, cycling, and safe public design over car-centric highway sprawl.
